Following Jesus & The Reward of Love

During His time of earthly ministry, there were many who wanted to follow Jesus to different degrees. The disciples left their nets and boats and answered Jesus' call to "follow me". A rich man, however, turned back with a heavy heart when Jesus challenged him to make Christ his most prized possession. Among those who followed Jesus, two women stand out for their commitment to go above and beyond and were rewarded for their devotion.

Mary Magdalene and Mary the mother of James are shining examples of how far true love and devotion will carry us in following Jesus. These two beautiful women stood with others and no doubt wept at the foot of the cross. These two women alone, however, then followed Jesus after His death and sat, no doubt continuing to weep, outside of the tomb where Jesus body was laid. How fitting then, that these two women, who followed Jesus with undying devotion, were the first to discover the empty tomb and see the risen Lord.

What an example these two women are to us who would also follow Jesus Christ. They show us that those who follow Christ will be rewarded according to the measure of their devotion. Song of Songs 8:6-7 declares:

"Place me like a seal over your heart, like a seal on your arm; for love is as strong as death, its jealousy unyielding as the grave. It burns like blazing fire, like a mighty flame. Many waters cannot quench love; rivers cannot sweep it away. If one were to give all the wealth of one’s house for love, it would be utterly scorned."

May our love for Jesus Christ be as strong and jealous and ablaze as that of Mary Magdalene and Mary the mother of James, for the Bible declares that our love for Christ will also surely have its reward.

Yours in Christ,

Peter Rogers
