I Don't Understand!
There are times when reading the Bible, that I come across passages that I struggle to understand. For example, I was recently reading John 16 and when I read verse 7, I was confounded. I didn't get it! Here it is:
"But I tell you the truth: it is for your good that I am going away. Unless I go away, the Counsellor will not come to you; but if I go, I will send him to you." (NIV)
OK, you might say: "What's so tricky there?" Fair enough! However, I was struck by that one word: "Unless". Why? Why was Jesus' Ascension the necessary precursor to Pentecost? Why couldn't the Holy Spirit begin His work immediately after the Resurrection?
We could speculate all we like about the reasons for this apparently necessary sequence. Jesus does not give an explanation. We can read Commentaries; we can study the Greek; we can read the verse in many different translations (and these are all good things to do!). At the end of it all however, we simply do not know the reason why Jesus had to ascend to Heaven, before the Holy Spirit could come.
What do we do with that? To me, this has more to do with building our faith, than needing to know the answers to all these type of questions. Jesus is my Lord and my Saviour. This means I have placed my faith in Him and therefore in what He has said. If He doesn't want to give an answer to my question, then my job is simply to accept what He has said.
That's called Faith!
